From making mountains out of molehills, to turning

This week was pretty crap to be honest. I took several exams and quizzes and for one exam I got 77.5. I studied the book but my weakness was in the presentation and videos we watched. I have noted that but I will try harder at looking into that. Ive already gotten started on my final project for that class and from the looks of it I may end up with a good mark especially because the person Im interviewing is my sister. The project is to basically find a job or industry I am interested in and learn about things that would make this job appealing. The job I choose was Computer Information Systems Management. Moving on in my second quiz for my derivatives class I got 11 out of 20 right. I probably wouldve done better if I didnt have problems prior and during the quiz. Prior to the quiz I was training for my VITA certification which was long and enduring and eventually passed the exam. It too so long to pass that I didnt have enough time to study for this quiz. In the end of that certification test I had a huge headache from looking at the computer screen all day. It carried over into the night and during the quiz I had a nosebleed. This has happened before to me but I kept my composure and slowed down in taking the quiz. Time ran out and I had a ton of questions left unanswered and guessed the remainder. After I received my exam back from economics which I got an 84. I was okay with it but still upset it wasnt a 90. I did get extra credit for correcting my answers and when my professor looked at my exam she said that the Teaching Assistant took off way too many points for a math error that was upside down so shes considering changing the peanalized points taken out.

Im happy for my biting the bullet attitude. I hate to quit especially on life and doing so turned everything around. Unfortunately because of that bad beginning week I have a lot of work to do to maintain a good standing in school. My volunteer income tax went great and I gained some experience. This volunteer work will go towards my school requirements as well as my fraternity requirements. In the end it all adds up and I want to get this done ASAP.

One thing that drew my attention is Elle-The-Cat's journal entry which I cant complain will bring me great utility. She is offering free sketches to the first 10 people who reply to her as well as other criteria posted on her journal entry. They say the best things in life are free and I have to agree especially with my budget constraints after receiving bills from the university which need to be paid by the end of the month. In addition, I like the axiom in economics that more is preferred to than less. Im not fiending looking for free offers all the time but this will put me into brighter spirits especially from this week. Here is her journal entry:

I typically prefer clothes and with fur for obvious reasons. Im not picky when it comes to poses or anything plus I like surprises of what anything looks like based on different people's drawing styles. These are the reference pictures.

Well this weekend will be a study my butt off weekend. I will continue on doing just that.

Networking

Well as far as my network goes its pretty much deteriorating. As far as my online friends go, I am now more focused on my work and dont talk very much to them. As bad as that sounds its actually going pretty well Ive aced my quizzes and have an exam coming up so I hope I will do good in school cause as I said before my GPA needs to go up. I got into a huge fight with my brother who Im now cutting off because he isnt reliable. I help him out but all he does is take and never give back. My friends at school are great especially since I see one of my best friends in class. As for the other I last saw him during the Super Bowl and he was upset at the outcome. I only hope they will put time away to at least play some basketball for the weekend.

In addition, I went to a career fair today where tons of companies were looking for prospective employees. My first hit was the U.S. Census Bureau. I asked questions regarding the economy and how does the agency work with this info. Eventually we went into a discussion about mathematics and the Cobb-Douglas equation. I enlightened him about the fact that the Cobb-Douglas equation was set up by a Senator and Mathematician. Later I went to Microsoft where I was surrounded by IT and computer science people and I felt like the odd man out because I was a Finance major. The line was super long but I got there early so I waited for about 45 minutes. When I was up I spoke with the recruiter and had him lighten up because he was repeatedly interviewing IT and computer science majors. He told me about the finance positions available and he also told me that this isnt only for IT and computer science people. I was relieved and also happy because if I was the only business person it would be great in the selection process. He asked me questions about my recent work and studies where I told him about my courses such as Derivatives and its relevance especially in currency swaps. Honestly to me the interview was pretty short because it took 5 minutes. Either my resume was really detailed or I wasnt interesting. Time will tell. I then met with the FDIC and asked him about the effects of the defaults on the FDIC. After I went to Infosys and spoke with the recruiter and she gave me an overview of Infosys and then asked me who the CEO was and my anxiety had me forget and replied "The name escaped me but I know it starts with an M". It was Murthy and I realized it when I got back. She told me that she just got back from a trip to Bangalore where she went to the campus and went through some training. I hope I can land an internship soon cause Im running out of time and I have some eggs put in an internship with Time Inc. This internship is paid and its $700 a week. Its about analytical marketing and its up my alley cause of my experience. Now I can only wait and see what will happen.

Prospective Potential

Roughly a week later and I have another update. As far as school goes Im doing very well I took my first two quizzes and handed in my homework for class. The first quiz I know I have one question wrong and the second Im pretty sure I have aced it. One was on derivative contracts and another on the definition of financial planning. Gotta keep up the good grades if I want to go to Cornell. My derivatives course is really taking my time because the book takes about three hours for me to read a section of the chapter the professor wants me to read (while taking notes). Financial Planning takes two which is actually my average when it comes to that. Those who are still in high school believe what your teachers say about putting in time for classes when youre not in class. As far as my homework goes we were told to skip 2 questions but me and a couple of other people working on it did the questions anyway and we were debating on an economic effect of taxation which we took different stances. I ended up right as the professor explained it in class. All and all good class day today.

As far as life goes Im thinking about becoming a Resident Advisor next year so I can get free board. Also Im thinking about not going back to my residence hall Im living in this year because yet again the fire alarm went off at 2:30 in the morning. The good thing was I wasnt asleep but still it is cold out and from prior experience we were out there while it was snowing. So that was the last straw and Im going to see if I can live on campus for free as an RA. I have joined a pool tournament where I dont expect to win but at least plan to relax while playing. It would be sweet to win the thing but Im not the best pool player and I need to know exactly the rules of the game so as I could get a grip of what I can actually do. I can do a mean jump shot but my accuracy (based on getting the intended ball in) is roughly 70 percent. Also I have considered doing a promotional video contest for the school of management. My best friend so far seems interested in the idea but Im reserving judgement on whether he means it or not. Once I assemble my team I will continue with that project. For those who dont know my work check it out on youtube its called "Faint Remastered (Miles "Tails" Prower Tribute)". It has received positive reviews and has been my one hit wonder with many revisions (Remastered, in my opinion, was the best of the three despite you will see 2 on my account). To remedy this Im considering on making another AMV one Ive actually scrapped. After seeing kelessic's videos, Ive considered to have her to provide me feedback and opinions. Lets wait till I work on it first which will be some time from now (more than likely in the summer).

As far as work goes, Im looking for an internship and so far no luck. Its kinda like Im undergoing frictional unemployment but I do have a job at the university but the internship is more for experience towards what Im studying. Plus I wont be in school over the summer (for the first time). I was offered an opportunity but the internship was too far and was unpaid. My logic was if its far then maybe they can compensate for gas but if its really far they have to pay an incentive. I cant drive 60 miles from there to home without an incentive because this drive will affect my sanity and my wallet. Im currently working on my resume and so far its looking good. Ive made some great improvements from last year and this year if I get an internship maybe I can make it more appealling to Grad Schools. From the looks of it my love is going to this school definitely. I have a year till I graduate so I have plenty of time to prepare but I still need to get some things done such as the GMAT prep and possibly considering taking the Series 65 exam. Id like as much credentials under my belt as possible to be considered for a specific grad school. There is a career workshop later this Friday and I intend on going. Also I have an Investment Club Meeting along with a Beta Alpha Psi meeting which I must attend. So many activities going on yet Im still holding on. I always have to look forward to the weekend.

Senior Year

Its been a while since Ive done a journal entry. Well its a new year and Im off to a productive start. Im now on my senior year of college and I could graduate in one major now if I wanted but Id like to graduate from both majors at the same time. The current classes Ive enrolled in are as follows:

Intro to Derivatives (Financial Derivatives not the one in Calculus)
Intermediate Microeconomics (Withdrew from the mathematical version too much that I swiched my B.S. to a B. A.)
Financial Planning
Intermediate Macroeconomics
Strategic Human Resource Management
Financial Econometrics

So far of these classes Im confident to have excellent marks in 4 of the 6 courses. As for the other two Im going to have to work hard to get my excellent marks. That means extra note taking, frequent visits to the professor's office, and buddying up with my friends which 2 are in the grad level of the course (one class mixes undergrad and grad students together). Overall Im very active in all of my courses and I hope it reflects the same way when I take the exams. I always build up anxiety and screw up here and there costing me an excellent grade. Last semester I expected worse but I did fairly well. Possibly luck was on my side.

Currently Im looking for internships and found several but havent heard a word from them. Its obvious the reason why it is difficult because Im searching mainly in the NYC area. My chances of getting one are very slim and if I do get one then I will be truly thankful. If I dont get an internship I will end up in Florida with a crappy job but hey I get money for it so whatever. I have also planned on going to my old summer internship job for the next semester so I can gain more experience with the firm and possibly get recommendations or maybe even a part time position when I graduate and plan to go to grad school. All of this is looking optimistically so I will take it with a grain of salt.

Last year was actually an okay year because I was given shitty situations and made the most of it to make it not suck. Its the old concept of when life hands you lemons make lemonade. Ive stuck to that and things looked pretty good. This year Im feeling the magic of potential on my side. Im doing all I can to do very well in school (despite Ive done fairly well overall) and want to take advantage of university life. Overall I cant wait for whats in store.

School Life

Sat Sep 9, 2006, 5:40 PM
Well Im finally in school. Actually I spent a good 2 weeks in school now. After some confusion here and there I managed to get myself veering to the right track. Once I catch up to my work then Ill be on the right track. I had to make some changes because the school thought I was going for a Bachelors in Arts when I wanted a Bachelors in Science. Also I decided on taking another major so that added more class changes. From the way it looks I may have to stay another year longer which honestly I dont care. Im on a quest for learning and as nerdy as that sounds I do it with style.

I joined several activities and I think too many activities. I may have to tell some of them I cant do it anymore. Im going to stick with wrestling, lacrosse, golf, and my learning community. For golf Im the treasurer of the club and students can play golf for free at the course 2 miles off. As for my learning community I am a co-representative and have my first meeting fairly soon so more responsibility. Wrestling and lacrosse I dont have anything really said in stone but I hope they start something soon. I know wrestling does but I want some lacrosse in as well. Im going to have to tell the rest of the activities off so I can get some time to myself. I also have to get some work-study in.

My class schedule looks pretty sweet. Im a full time student. Also I have Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off. The only bad thing is that Im taking one course thats not going to process in, what I think, any of the categories for the two majors. I applied to my other major but it's in another school so I applied to the other school. As long as I maintain a 3.0 GPA I should be able to do it. Honestly I dont care about the minimum I always go for the maximum. Im no 4.0 student but Im willing to try without the sucking up to teachers or whatever else those people do (no offense). I do things my way.

All and all living in a university is quite an experience. My meal plans keep me from starving to death and so does my love for ramen. I do my laundry pretty well. My room is clean for the most part (I cant say much for my roommate though). Im organized to an extent that I feel confident that I should be caught up by this week. Its getting pretty cold now I may need to get my sweaters ready to wear. All and all Im doing pretty good for myself. Unfortunately with all these responsibilites I rarely get a chance to myself. I will take occasional breaks from learning so not to fry my brain but it doesnt last very long in the weekdays. Maybe its just because Im not caught up yet but Ill see if I can do better.
